Cognitive Impairment

Cognitive Impairment
It can be disconcerting when your mind isn’t as sharp as it used to be. If your memory problems are causing you concern, Steve Best, MD, offers leading-edge brain imaging techniques to evaluate brain function. If you do have a cognitive impairment, The Neuroscience Center offers a variety of treatment approaches, including perispinal etanercept injections and hyperbaric chamber treatments to rejuvenate brain function. Cognitive Impairment Q & A

The Neuroscience Center

What is cognitive impairment?

Cognitive impairment is a term that encompasses a variety of mental issues including:

  • Mild cognitive impairment
  • Static encephalopathy
  • Degenerative brain disease
  • Dementia

Cognitive conditions can affect memory, thinking, learning, and language. The decrease in mental performance can lead to the development of mood disorders.

What causes cognitive impairment?

Sometimes people are born with cognitive deficits while others lose cognitive function as they age. Other environmental, lifestyle, and physical factors can lead to cognitive impairment, including:

  • Alcohol or drug use
  • Toxic pesticides
  • Nutritional deficiency
  • Concussions
  • Vascular disease
  • Degenerative brain disease (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, etc.)

Researchers have found an association between cognitive impairment and abnormal protein clumps, Lewy bodies, and hippocampal shrinkage. Sometimes, small strokes and reduced glucose use in the brain can also influence cognition.

How do you treat cognitive impairment?

Dr. Best’s treatment approach depends on the underlying cognitive condition and cause of impairment. For example, Dr. Best may use Alzheimer’s or high blood pressure drugs to treat those specific underlying conditions. Concussions, strokes, and other brain injuries respond well to hyperbaric treatments and etanercept injections.

Perispinal etanercept injections

Perispinal injections send etanercept through the nervous system and up to the brain, creating an anti-inflammatory effect. If inflammation is contributing to your cognitive impairment, the injections may aid in recovery. Combining the injections with the hyperbaric chamber gives targeted areas of the brain a significant boost.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy

Inside the hyperbaric chamber, Dr. Best gives you pure oxygen and increases atmospheric pressure so your body can distribute that oxygen with greater efficiency. As the body delivers oxygen to the brain, it restores cognitive function.

Depending on your condition, The Neuroscience Center provides additional therapies as well as state-of-the-art brain imaging techniques. Dr. Best often uses combination therapies to enhance the effects of treatment.
